AFCON 2019 winner Belmadi nominated for FIFA Best Coach award

The winning coach of the just-concluded Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt, Djamel Belmadi of Algeria, has been nominated for the 2019 FIFA Best Coach award.

Belmadi led the Desert Foxes of Algeria to their second AFCON title after successfully conquering the continent in the land of the Pharaohs earlier this month, defeating Senegal in the final.

He is set to battle for the prize alongside top Premier League coaches, Pep Guardiola of Manchester City, who led his side to the league title, and favourite Jurgen Klopp of Liverpool, who won the UEFA Champions League.

Tottenham Hotspur boss, Mauricio Pochettino was also nominated, alongside holder and France boss Didier Deschamps, Brazil manager Tite and Portugal chief Fernando Santos, for the prize at the Best FIFA Football Awards.

Marcelo Gallardo, Ricardo Gareca and Erik ten Hag made up the 10-man shortlist, with the winner of the prize to be announced in September at The Best ceremony in Milan.

In the women’s coach category, FIFA Women’s World Cup winner, Jill Ellis was nominated for the best women’s coach prize, alongside coach of runners-up Netherlands, Sarina Wiegman.
