AFCON: Cameroon come from behind to earn first Group A win

Four-time champions Cameroon opened winning in Group A as they fought back to deny debutants Guinea-Bissau a historic first win at the CAF Africa Cup of Nations on Wednesday.

The first-timers went into a sensational early lead against Cameroon, but the Indomitable Lions came from a goal down to claim a dramatic 2-1 victory – their first AFCON win since 2010.

Piqueti, who plays his football for Braga’s B team, picked up the ball in his own half and ran the length of the pitch, before striking past Fabrice Ondoa to give Guinea-Bissau the most stunning of leads after just 13 minutes of the tie.

Sebastien Siani hammered home from 20 yards to level the game 15 minutes into the second half.

And in the 78th minute, Michael Ngadeu-Ngadjui hit the ball home from the edge of the penalty area to secure the late win for Cameroon.

In the other group A tie earlier on Wednesday, hosts Gabon fought back from 1-0 down with a goal from their star player, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, to hold Burkina Faso.

Both sides came out of their opening encounters with the same scoreline, with Gabon denied late on by Guinea-Bissau, while Burkina Faso were held by Cameroon.

The Borussia Dortmund winger converted a penalty to earn the hosts a point, after substitute Prejuce Nakoulma opened the scoring in the 23rd minute for the opposition.

Victory moves the Indomitable Lions to the top of Group A, requiring just a point from their final group game against Gabon to qualify for the next round. While they face Gabon on Sunday, Guinea-Bissau will take on Burkina Faso on the same day.
