AFCON: Defending champions Ivory Coast draw 2-2 against DR Congo

Reigning champions Ivory Coast netted-in twice against DR Congo to earn a 2-2 draw and keep alive their hopes of reaching the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon on Friday.

Neeskens Kebano’s low drive opened the scoring for DR Congo in the 9th minute of the game, but Wilfried Bony equalised with a powerful header just about sixteen minutes later.

DR Congo regained the lead when Junior Kabananga headed in, and continued in the lead even after half time. Ivory Coast salvaged a point when Serey Die’s 20-yard shot was deflected in during the second half.

Salomon Kalou almost had a late winner for Ivory Coast when he volleyed in superbly but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Congo DR were victorious in their first match against Morocco, and are now leaders of Group C with 4 points.

Ivory Coast, who played out a goalless draw with Togo in their opening game, are thus having their second draw at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations, having two points and placed 3rd in Group C – a position attained after Morocco gained all three points against Togo in the other group tie on Friday.

The Ivorians will play their final group match against second-placed Morocco on Tuesday – a match that’d determine the progress of the defending champions in the CAF tournament – while Congo DR will play against Togo, who are already out of the championship.
