AFCON: DR Congo thrash Togo 3-1, finish top of Group C

DR Congo reached the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations last eight in grand style after emerging as Group C winners with a 3-1 victory against Togo on Tuesday night.

Star striker Junior Kabananga kept up his goal-scoring form as he fired the Leopards into a 29th minute lead. Firmin Ndombe Mubele made it 2-0 just after the break.

Kodjo Fo-Doh Laba’s tidy finish gave Togo hope, but Paul-Jose M’Poku’s free-kick secured a deserved DR Congo win.

In the group’s other game, holders Ivory Coast were knocked out after a 1-0 defeat by Morocco, who go through as group runners-up.

Togo, who had more of the ball possession in the game, finished last in the group standings with a single point, as defending champions Ivory Coast finished at the third spot with two points. While DR Congo and Morocco amassed seven and six points respectively to finish first and second.

DR Congo will now play the Group D runners-up in the quarter-finals, which will be one of Mali, Ghana or – most likely – Egypt; while Morocco will face the team that tops the Group.
