AFCON: Egypt defeats Ghana, sets up Morocco quarter-final clash

Record seven-time champions Egypt emerged as Group D winners after a 1-0 victory over Ghana in Port-Gentil on Wednesday.

They will now play Morocco in the quarter-finals of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.

Roma forward Mohamed Salah rifled a free-kick into the net in the 11th minute for a win that lifted his team to the top of the final Group D standings, one point ahead of fellow qualifiers Ghana.

Daniel Amartey missed the Black Stars’ best chance, heading wide from Christian Atsu’s free-kick to the back post; and ended up conceding their first goal in the tournament from Salah.

Egypt will stay in Port-Gentil for a last-eight showdown with Group C runners-up Morocco on Sunday, while Ghana will face Group C Winners Democratic Republic of Congo in Oyem the same day.

In the other quarter-final ties on Saturday, Burkina Faso will meet Tunisia and Senegal will tackle Cameroon.
