AFCON: Egypt knocks out Morocco to reach semis

Seven-time African champions Egypt have advanced to the semi-finals of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations after grabbing a 1-0 victory over Morocco on Sunday.

Substitute Mahmoud Abdel-Moneim prodded home the dramatic 87th-minute winner to send the Pharoahs to the last four.

Prior to the goal Morocco missed a host of good chances, but were not able to reach the back of the net till close to end of the game.

The defeat meant Morocco boss Herve Renard’s bid to become the first manager to win three AFCON titles with three different nations is now over. The Frenchman led Zambia to triumph in 2012, and in 2015, he won with Ivory Coast.

Egypt is the most successful side in the history of the biennial competition with seven titles, and are yet to concede a goal in Gabon.

In the other quater-finals clach of Sunday, the Ayew brothers scored one goal each against DR Congo to send the Black Stars of Ghana into the next stage of the competition.

As it stands, Egypt will go on to play Burkina Faso, who beat Tunisia 2-0 on Saturday. While Ghana have set up a meeting with Cameroon, who knocked out Senegal also on Saturday.

Burkina Faso v Egypt – Wednesday
Cameroon v Ghana -Thursday
