AFCON FALLOUT: Grant steps down as Ghana coach

Following a fourth-place finish of the Black Stars at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, the Ghana Football Association and coach Avram Grant have parted ways on mutual consent.

This was announced after a closed door meeting held on Tuesday in Accra between the Ghana Football Association and the Israeli gaffer.

A statement released on the official website of Ghana FA confirmed that the two parties agreed to mutually discontinue their contract when it expires at the end of February.

“The Ghana Football Association and Black Stars Head coach Avram Grant have agreed that the two parties will mutually part ways after their contract ends on February 28,” the statement reads.

The 62-year old, who took the Ghana job in November 2014, had also defended Ghana’s squad for the 2017 AFCON by stating unequivocally that the 23 men were the best at his disposal.

“I think we chose the best players and we didn’t have any superstars on our side,” he said.

“I’ve hugely enjoyed my time in Ghana taking over after the disastrous 2014 World Cup campaign and rebuilding the squad to reach the final in the African Cup of Nations for only the second time in 23 years, and also the semi-final of this year’s competition.

“And the passion and loyalty of the supporters is something I’ll always remember.”

Meanwhile, French coach Herve Renard and Serbian Micho, according to Ghana soccer website, are leading the race to replace Grant as head coach of the Black Stars.
