Nigeria’s Flying Eagles are one victory away from clinching the gold medal in the men’s football event at the ongoing All Africa Games in Morocco.

The team are through to the final, following a 5-4 penalty shootout win against Mali in their semi-final fixture on Tuesday.

The game was goalless after 120 minutes before the penalty shootout decided the winners.

In regulation time, Abubakar Ibrahim failed to convert a penalty awarded to Nigeria in the 21st minute when Success Makanjuola was fouled inside the box.

That was the game’s best chance, but Nigeria still put in super efforts during the shootout as all five kicks were converted, while the Malian team missed their last kick.

Nigeria had lost 4-3 on penalties to Mali early this year at the Africa U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Niger.

The Flying Eagles will be gunning for the gold medal when they play in the final.

The last time Nigeria won football Gold was in the 1973 games, which was hosted by Nigeria.
