AFRIMA announces 4 new categories, weeks after entries have been submitted

Weeks after announcing the opening of entry submissions for its annual music awards, organisers of the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) have announced the addition of four new award categories.

According to the organisers, the new categories will enjoin inclusiveness and expand the playing field in the awarding process for African music artistes.

“The newly introduced award categories namely African DJ of the Year; Best African Dance/Choreography; African Lyricist/Rapper of the Year and Best African Act in Diaspora (Female & Male), were carefully arrived at after extensive consultations with African music stakeholders which included the AFRIMA Academy of Voters and members of the International Committee of AFRIMA,” a statement by the organisers revealed.

AFRIMA awards categories are divided into two: Continental and Regional categories. The Continental Category rewards African artistes in various music genres and forms ranging from pop, hip hop, inspirational, jazz, electro, DJ and more, while the Regional Category celebrates the outstanding achievements of African artistes within their specific region of origin.

Last month, the organisers announced the opening of entry for submissions after the recent unveiling of calendar of activities for the 2018 edition of AFRIMA in Accra, Ghana, which included a courtesy visit to the President of Ghana, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo by officials of African Union, the International Committee of AFRIMA and African music stars.
