After 2-day manhunt, French police gundown Strasbourg attack suspect

TheStrasbourg attack suspect who shot, killed 3 victims and wounded 12 others near Christmas a market has met his waterloo after he was gunned down in brief gun battle with police.

The suspect identified as Cherif Chekatt, 29, was shot dead after more than 700 French security forces in the northeastern French city had been hunting for him for two days.

According to French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner, three police officers tried to question Chekatt after spotting him “wandering” through the streetsin Strasbourg’s Neudorf area, where he grew up, but he opened fire.

“They immediately returned fire and neutralised the assailant,” Castaner said.

Reports say the incident happened when the gunman opened fire at around 8pm local time (19:00 GMT) on Tuesday in on one of the city’s busiest streets.

After the incident, the French government raised its security threat to the highest level and also bolstered border controls.
