APC TO BUHARI: What manner of corruption are we fighting?

The presidency in a terse statement Tuesday said that President Muhammadu Buhari needed more rest as results of the various medical tests conducted on him indicated as such.

Buhari left Nigeria for the UK on January 19 in what the presidency described as a medical vacation.

Addressing Nigerians, however, on Tuesday, Buhari’s Special,Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said of the President’s health status, “During his normal annual checkup, tests showed he needed a longer period of rest, necessitating the President staying longer than originally planned.”

Adesina’s statement reads in full: “President Muhammadu Buhari thanks millions of Nigerians who have been sending good wishes and praying for his health and well-being in mosques and churches throughout the country.
“The President is immensely grateful for the prayers, show of love and concern.

“President Buhari wishes to reassure Nigerians that there is no cause for worry.

Buhari’s health had been subject of intense debate and concern leading to rumours of his death about two weeks ago. While denying such and working to douse its spread, many top ranking state officials have visited with the ailing President with pictures of each visitor syndicated to convince Nigerians that the president was still alive.

Among those who have visited are party leader, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Senate President Bukola Saraki, Speaker House of Representatives Yakubu Dogora and Aisha, the President’s wife.

Beyond these visits and a phone conservation he is said to have had with President Donald Trump of the US, there are no records of Buhari undertaking any public outing since arriving London on January 19.

Public demands for the ailing President to speak to Nigerians via a broadcast of any form has been rebuffed by the presidency who claim that it is within his rights to choose when to speak to his countrymen.

Buffeted by ethnic cleavages, there are growing concerns that a fierce power play is in the offing if Buhari becomes incapacitated, his formal transmission of power to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo not withstanding.

There have also been claims that some presidency officials had embarked on a mission lobbying members of the National Assembly, not to move against the President due to his absence necessitated by medical needs.
