After four months in limbo, detained journalist freed on bail

Jones Abiri, a detained investigative journalist who is standing trial for alleged links to armed militancy in the Niger Delta, was on Friday released on bail.

He was arraigned by the Department of State Services (DSS) at the Federal High Court, Abuja, on charges of terrorism, economic sabotage, and fraud.

Abiri was freed after he presumably perfected his bail terms.

The court granted the journalist bail in the sum of N100mllion in June and until his release on Friday, he had struggled to raise the sum demanded by the court.

However, he claimed there were no conditions surrounding his release.

The publisher of the Weekly Source newspaper was arrested in May and has repeatedly denied the charges against him.

Abiri had insisted that he was arrested because of articles criticizing the oil companies and the government for impoverishing the people of the oil-rich Niger Delta.
