Again, Toyota recalls another 2.4m hybrid cars

Barely a month after a recall that affected hybrid cars, Japanese car giant, Toyota, has said it is recalling another 2.4 million hybrid cars.

According to Toyota, the recall is as a result of a fault that lead to crashes.

About 1 million hybrid cars were recalled globally by Toyota in September after it uncovered a technical problem that causes fires.

The latest recall affects several models of the Prius and its Auris hybrid vehicles produced between October 2008 and November 2014.

A breakdown shows that more than a million of the affected cars are in Japan, another 830,000 are in North America, 290,000 in Europe, 3,000 in China, and the rest in other parts of the world.

In the statement announcing the recall, Toyota said the cars had already been involved in previous recalls in 2014 and 2015, but “the remedy conducted then did not anticipate the new condition identified in this recall”.

The problem identified arises when the cars fail to enter “failsafe driving mode as intended”.

“If this occurs, the vehicle could lose power and stall. While power steering and braking would remain operational, a vehicle stall while driving at higher speeds could increase the risk of a crash,” Toyota said.

According to reports, Japan’s transportation ministry said Toyota had reported three malfunctions locally related to the issue, but no accidents.

“We can’t assess the impact of the recall immediately as we first need to analyse details of the problem, but the latest recall at least raised concerns as Prius is Toyota’s leading brand,” said Satoru Takada, an analyst at TIW, a Tokyo-based research and consulting firm.
