Aiyegbeni joins English League One club Coventry City

Ex-Nigeria international Yakubu Aiyegbeni has joined English League One side Coventry City on a short term deal that culminates at the end of the season.

The 34-year old, who had been with Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, Everton and Blackburn Rovers, has scored 96 goals in 253 Premier League appearances and 11 goals in 20 league appearances during his time on loan at Leicester City, and is expected to provide much-needed firepower to the third-tier club.

Coventry City Boss, Russell Slade, told the club’s website: “We’re pleased to have secured the signing of Yakubu, who brings vast experience and a terrific goal record.

“His professional career speaks for itself, having scored consistently at the highest level of English football, and will act as a superb role model for the younger players.”

Coventry are currently bottom in the League One campaign with 21 points from 30 games, and are 5 points behind Chesterfield, who are just one place above them.

Hence, Aiyegbeni’s scoring prowess is likely what the club needs to top up their achievements from the remaining games of this season.

“He (Yakubu) is astute on the ball, has clear quality and presence, and we’ll continue to work on his match fitness as we prepare for the final 16 games of this season,” Slade added in his statement.

Before returning to England, the former Super Eagles striker played for Chinese Super League’s Guangzhou Evergrande where he netted 24 times in 43 appearances, and had a brief spell in Turkey last season at Super Lig outfit Kayserispor.
