Batshuayi nets late winner as Chelsea pip Ajax in Champions League

A late goal by Michy Batshuayi was enough to hand Chelsea all three points against Ajax in a Champions League group match on Wednesday.

Ajax, last season’s Champions League semi-finalists, held on to the 86th minute, and could have earned a point from the encounter.

The Dutch giants, who had won both their Group H games prior to the visit of the Blues, had a goal ruled out in the first half.

Substitute Batshuayi made sure Ajax got nothing from the game when he scored to seal off a hugely impressive away performance by Chelsea.

The Frank Lampard side recorded a second successive win that moves them top of the group H, level with Ajax on six points.

The other game of the group between Lille and Valencia will be decided later on Wednesday.

The other Champions League encounter played concurrently between RB Leipzig and Zenit Petersburg ended 2-1 in the German side’s favour.

Leipzig stay on top of Group G pending the result of the other group game between Benfica and Olympique Lyon later in the day.
