Akpabio to CAF: Investigate, sanction Libya over Super Eagles’ mistreatment

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, on Tuesday, strongly condemned the ill-treatment of Nigeria’s Super Eagles and its delegation towards the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match in Libya.
Describing the incident as “a stark reminder of the disregard for human dignity and lack of respect for international norms,” Akpabio emphasized that the reported mistreatment is unacceptable and breaches the principles of fair play and sportsmanship.
“This unfortunate incident is a stark reminder of the disregard for human dignity and the lack of respect for international norms,” Akpabio stated through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh.
“As the President of the Senate, Akpabio stands in solidarity with the Super Eagles, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), and the entire Nigerian football community in condemning this unjust treatment.

“The Nigerian Senate will continue to monitor this situation closely and ensure that the rights and dignity of our citizens are protected. We will not tolerate any form of mistreatment or disrespect towards our nationals, regardless of the circumstances.
“We demand a thorough investigation from the Disciplinary Committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and appropriate sanctions to be meted out against those involved.
“It is also imperative that the Libyan authorities take immediate action to investigate this incident and ensure that those responsible are held accountable to prevent future occurrences,” Akpabio noted.
Similarly, Nigeria’s Sports Minister John Enoh has condemned the mistreatment, revealing that he contacted CAF President Patrice Motsepe and Secretary-General Veron Mosengo-Omba to address the situation. Enoh described the incident as an “almost hostage” scenario, vowing to seek further action from CAF.
The Super Eagles were diverted mid-flight to Al Abraq Airport, a small airport typically used for hajj operations, and left stranded for over 15 hours without food, accommodation, or proper access to facilities. This incident has sparked outrage in the football community, with the team announcing their decision to boycott the AFCON qualifier due to the ordeal.
The incident highlights concerns about the safety of international teams traveling to Libya and emphasizes the need for improved security and logistical arrangements for visiting teams. Akpabio’s stance is clear: “We will not tolerate any form of mistreatment or disrespect towards our nationals, regardless of the circumstances.”
