Akpeyi not moved by criticism, eyes World Cup squad

Super Eagles and Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi said he is happy to be making steady improvements following his award as player of the month for September/October in the South African Premiership.

Akpeyi has been in fantastic form for his club this season and has established himself as the Amakhosi’s first choice goalie following injury to Bafana Bafana goalkeeper, Itumeleng Khune.

The 33-year-old made his 9th league appearance last Wednesday night in their 4-0 away win against Stellenbosch FC at the Cape Town Stadium.

“It is (award) a big surprise to me, but it also shows the importance of putting effort in whatever you do. I give credit to the technical team who have been patient with me,” Akpeyi on receiving the award told a news conference on Thursday.

“I’m settling in, I’m taking each game as it comes. Khune is a good keeper, I’m just grateful for the opportunity from the coach. It’s a healthy competition in that [goalkeeping] department. I’m just happy to be improving all the time.”

Kaizer Chiefs manager, Ernst Middendorp was also named coach of the month for September/October.
