Akwa Utd, MFM crash out of CAF Confederation Cup, Enyimba reach group stage

Three of Nigeria’s representatives at the CAF Confederation Cup, Akwa United, MFM and Plateau United, have crashed out of the competition, as only Enyimba made it to the group stage.

Nigeria champions, Plateau United had been evicted on Tuesday after falling 5-2 on aggregate to Algeria’s USM Alger, and are now joined by Uyo side, Akwa United and MFM of Lagos.

Despite defeating Al Hilal of Sudan 3-1 in the second leg of their play-off tie at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo, The Promise Keepers failed to advance, having lost 2-0 in the first leg.

AI-Hilal skipper Basheer opened the scoring in the 28th minute, but Michael Ibe drew both teams level four minutes into the second half and then went on to complete a hat-trick, which however did not help.

Meanwhile, in Bamako Mali, MFM played a goalless draw against Djoliba AC– a scoreline that was not enough to see them through, as they had earlier lost 1-0 at home in the first leg.

Enyimba of Aba are the only Nigerian team that will play in the group stage of the second-tier continental competition, as they progressed on the away goal rule.

Enyimba hosted Bidvest Wits of South Africa in the second leg of their play-off tie at the UJ Esuene Stadium, Calabar on Wednesday and were held to a goalless draw.

The first leg at Johannesburg a fortnight ago ended 1-1, and the away goal for the People’s Elephants made all the difference.
