ALLEGED N550M FRAUD: Ex-FCT Minister Bala gets N500m bail

The former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mohammed Bala, has been granted bail by an FCT High Court.

The presiding judge, Justice Abubakar Talba, had on Wednesday May 10, despite Mohammed’s not guilty plea, after hearing the bail application adjourned the matter till May 12 for ruling and ordered the minister to be remanded in Kuje Maximum Prison.

However, when the case came up in court this Friday, Justice Talba granted Mohammed bail in the sum of N500m with two sureties in like sum.

Justice Talba held that one of the sureties must be a Senator, while the other must be a director of the Federal Civil Service and that the two sureties must have landed property in the FCT and show evidence of tax payment in the last three years.

He further ordered Mohammed to deposit his passport with the Registrar of the court.

The former minister was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on six counts bordering on abuse of office while he served as Minister of the FCT.

Among other things the EFCC leveled against the former minister was that while he was in office, he allegedly collected gratification to the tune of N550 million and that he failed to declare properties belonging to him, as required by law.
