Alonso bags brace as Chelsea beat Spurs

Marcos Alonso scored twice as Premier League champions Chelsea beat Tottenham 2-1 to secure their first league win this season at Wembley on Sunday.

Playing home at the national stadium as the White Hart Lane is being renovated, Tottenham fell behind in the 24th minute when Alonso’s first goal put the visitors ahead.

In the second half, Michy Batshuayi headed Christian Eriksen’s cross into his own net on 82 minutes to hand Spurs hope of securing at least a point from the game.

But Alonso restored lead for the visitors only six minutes later, as he found space in the box to drill a low finish under goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

“I am disappointed because we deserved more but they were very clinical with two shots on target and two goals,” Tottenham Boss, Mauricio Pochettino, said after the game.

“We dominated and we were better but if you are not clinical, you can lose like today.”

Spurs’ 19-game home Premier League unbeaten run has come to an end, with Chelsea the first side to beat Spurs away from home since Southampton in May 2016.

Spurs will host Burnley in their next league game on August 27.
