Amaechi scales committee screening

Former governor of Rivers State, and ministerial nominee, Rotimi Amaechi on Monday scaled the screening of the senate committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public petitions when it announced suspension of the petition against Amaechi.

The petition had been brought before the Senate by Senator George Sekibo (Rivers East‎), had argued on behalf of other Rivers senators that the nomination of Amaechi as a minister was questionable, owing to the fact that he was accused of looting N70 billion of Rivers’ funds.

But the committee chairman, Senator Senator Samuel Anyanwu told newsmen that the decision to step down on the petition was reached as a result of a pending suit against the charges against Amaechi.

Amaechi had also informed the committee that charges contained in the petition were being challenged in court.

Earlier, another nominee, Hajiya Amina Ibrahim told the committee that she will be representing Gombe state in the Buhari cabinet and not Kaduna as widely reported.

Both were being grilled ahead of tomorrow’s screening by a committee of the whole.

Senator Danjuma La’ah from Kaduna state had petitioned the senate leadership against Amina’s nomination to represent the state. However, in her presentation to the committee on Monday, Amina said, “I am assuming that I will be representing Gombe state because I am not from Kaduna state. My father is from Gombe state and I was born in Gombe state. I was only educated in Kaduna state.”
