Amid attack over line disconnections, MTN shuts offices nationwide

MTN Nigeria has ordered the closure of its offices nationwide due to the violence that broke out over the disconnection of some MTN lines.

Trouble had started after telecom providers like MTN, Airtel, Glo reportedly disconnected some subscribers for failing to link their National Identification Number NIN to their SIM cards, with mostly MTN subscribers affected.

Some angry users who were affected by the disconnection had stormed several an office of MRN located in Lagos and wreaked havoc in the process.

The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC had to wade in by ordering MTN and other telcos to restore the lines temporarily.

However, still worried that violence could still ensue, the telecommunications outfit in a message to its customers on Tuesday, July 30, 2024 announced the closure of its offices nationwide.

“Yello, customer, please be informed that our shops nationwide will be closed today, 30th July 2024,” the company said on its customer support X handle.

MTN, however, directed its customers to use their “digital channels” for support.

While no official reasons were given for the closure, the move came barely 24 hours after aggrieved customers vandalised MTN’s office in the Festac and Isheri areas of Lagos.

In other parts of the country, customers whose lines were disconnected had besieged MTN’s offices in a bid to rectify the issue.
