Amnesty crying wolf –Nigerian military

Published

on

Military authorities have dismissed allegations of widespread torture and extrajudicial killings by the Amnesty International (AI) against some senior military officers serving and retired.

Defence Headquarters stated this in a reaction to a call by the global human rights organisation for the immediate investigation of top past and present military commanders including former Chief of Army Staff, General Azubuike Ihejirika, former of Defence Staff, Admiral Ola Sa’ad Ibrahim, current Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Badeh and current Chief of Army Staff, General Ken Minimah for possible war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by the Nigeria military in its fight against Islamist extremist insurgents, Boko Haram.

The military high command said it is unfortunate that all effort made in the allegation was geared towards continuation of blackmail against the military hierarchy in which the organisation had embarked upon as far back as the inception of military’s action against terrorist in the North East.

It maintained that the officers mentioned in the report have no reason, whatsoever, to indulge in the allegation made against them, adding that it is unfortunate that the AI just went out to gather names of specified senior officers, in a calculated attempt to rubbish their reputation as well as the image of the military.
