ANAMBRA: Police bar 'new Speaker', his group from entering Assembly complex

The supposed new Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly, Ikem Uzoezie, was on Thursday locked out of the Assembly complex along with lawmakers in his faction by the Nigerian Police.

Uzoezie had led about 19 other lawmakers of the House on November 13, to purportedly impeach Rita Maduagwu as the Speaker of the House.

He was subsequently selected as the new Speaker of the House by the lawmakers.

However, no less than 200 policemen who barricaded the entrance to the legislative complex as early as 8: am on Thursday, had stopped Uzoezie and the lawmakers in his group at the gate of the complex and ordered them to leave and not enter the complex.

The police insisted the lawmakers must not enter the complex despite Uzoezie and his spending over two hours begging the security operatives to allow them entrance.

The factional Speaker, who addressed newsmen later, lamented the continued sealing of the state House of Assembly complex by the Police. He described the development as unconstitutional and affront to democracy.

Recall that Maduagwu had described her supposed impeachment by about 20 out of the 30 members of the State Assembly as “a bundle of illegality.”

It is also important to note that the ruling party in the state, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Anambra State chapter, had since decried Uzoezie and his group action and had suspended him; the Deputy Speaker, Hayford Oseke and Victor Okoye who were identified as the “ring leaders” of the impeachment plot.
