Angela Merkel to quit politics in 2021

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has hinted that she will quit politics in the year 2021 when her current term ends.

Merkel says she will step down as leader of Germany’s ruling Christian Democratic Union after 18 years, declaring that her career in politics would end in 2021.

According to reports, Merkel’s decision to quit politics is expected to trigger a bitter struggle for one of Europe’s most successful post-war parties.

Merkel’s authority has been gradually eroded after she returned to office for a fourth term after the CDU won its fourth term last year.
