Angry Imo residents triumph as Okorocha restores Assumpta Avenue named after Buhari

The fierce protest by angry citizens of Imo State against Governor Rochas Okorocha’s renaming of Assumpta Avenue as Muhammadu Buhari Road has paid off as the road has been restored to its original name.

Following the renaming of the road, which several decades ago was named after the magnificent Maria Assumpta Catholic Cathedral, Owerri as Muhammadu Buhari Road, there have been uneasy calm in Owerri, the Imo State capital.

The road with the Zip Code 460211, stretches from the old Library Roundabout, Okigwe/Wetheral Roads, to Assumpta Cathedral, Control Post.

The state’s newly appointed Information Commissioner, Professor Nnamdi Obiaraeri, who confirmed the restoration of the road to its original name argued that it was never government’s intention to rename the said strategic road.

According to the commissioner, “Assumpta Avenue is symbolic for both religious and historic reasons in Imo State, and these facts are not lost on the government and people of Imo State. All inconveniences occasioned by the initial oversight or error of wrongly installing a street sign, suggesting a renaming of the street is highly regretted.”
