GUINEA: Opposition attack polling station, clash with police to disrupt referendum

Suspected thugs on Monday attacked some traders at Onitsha Bridge Head Drug Market, Anambra State.

The traders were in a meeting of the leaders of the market ahead of their election, when they were allegedly attacked with chairs and broken bottles.

During the meeting, the president-general of the traders, Sunday Obinze, was said to have announced that there would be an election.

The announcement did not go down well with some aspirants, who questioned why an election would be fixed without first informing those running for vacant positions.

As the meeting debated the matter, some angry thugs were said to have invaded the meeting venue and attacked those at the meeting with every object they could lay their hands on.

According to Ndubisi Chukwuleta and Ugochukwu Nwosu, who are both contending for the leadership position of the group, Obinze was acting a script to foist an unpopular candidate on the traders.
