The public outcry that greeted the statement credited to the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu is yet to die down.

A section of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, and some Civil Society Groups (CSOs) has called for his immediate resignation.

The South-south chapter of the APC in a statement in Abuja through its National Vice Chairman, Prince Hilliard Eta said it aligned itself with the position of it National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Tinubu had called on Kachikwu to honourably resign his position from the President Muhammadu Buhari’s led government since he seemed incapable of doing his part by efficiently running the ministry assigned to him and providing workable solution to the current fuel scarcity in the country.

Calling on Kachikwu to descend from his high horse and squarely face the task before him, the party said responsibility to the people is one of the cardinal points of the APC.

“Kachikwu has not entirely cast off the orientation of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP where he was”, Eta said, adding that the traits are still manifesting in his actions and utterances such as the recent one that attracted opprobrium from many Nigerians.

“In the light of the foregoing, Mr. Kachikwu must not be a cog in the wheel of progress and he should do the needful by resigning honourably if he is not capable of doing his part by efficiently running the ministry assigned to him”.

Similarly, the Civil Society Coalition for Positive Change and Stand Up for Nigeria (SUN) have issued a 72 hours ultimatum to the minister to resign from office over the prolonged scarcity.

In a joint statement by Comrade Venatius Torkuma and Labake Boboye, National President and Executive Director of the groups, they said Kachikwu had failed to justify his appointment.

Describing Kachikwu’s statement as both “careless” and “insulting” to Nigerians who voted for the current administration, the group called on President Muhammadu Buhari to fire Kachikwu if he refuses to resign.

The group also threatened to take to the street on Wednesday in “a mother of all protests” in the nation’s capital to draw the attention of President Muhammadu Buhari and members of the international community should the minister refuse to resign.

“Since he has admitted that he cannot restore normalcy to the current fuel crisis, he should immediately resign his position. Indeed Kachikwu was not coerced to take this job.”
