Senator Akume cries to Tribunal over defeat, begs to be declared senator-elect

An appeal filed by former governor of Benue State, Senator George Akume, before the Appeal Court challenging the victory of Barr Emmanuel Orkejev as the senator representing Benue North West has been dismissed.

The court at a resumed sitting on Friday presided over by Justice I. G Mbaba, threw out the petition of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Akume and upheld the election of Orkejev of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP.

In a judgment read by justice, Louise Otis, J.C.A, the court upheld the judgment of the Tribunal on grounds that the appellant’s Appeal lacks merit; the appellant was also not able to prove his case.

The court concluded that all evidence were based on hearsay evidence.

Akume had earlier approached the State Election Tribunal but his petition challenging the election of Barr Okejev in the March 9 elections was dismissed prompting him to approach the Appeal Court to quash the judgment of the lower court but his effort has, however, come to nothing.
