Apple considers moving iPhone production from Taiwan to the US

iPhone maker Apple has begun exploring the possibility of moving smartphone production to the U.S.

A report, published on Friday, cites a source familiar with Apple’s plans that the Cupertino, California-based company has tasked Taiwanese tech firms Foxconn and Pegatron, which are responsible for assembling more than 200 million iPhones annually, to investigate the feasibility of assembling iPhones in the U.S.

Pegatron declined, citing logistical concerns. Foxconn agreed to begin compiling a report as soon as June, but company chairman Terry Gou warned that production costs would rise drastically as a result.

An iPhone made in the U.S. could retail for as much as twice the going rate, or $1,300 for a 32GB iPhone 7 versus $650 today, some studies say. Other analysts theorize the retail cost could change as little as $80 – $90.
