Arik cuts flights as scarcity of aviation fuel bites harder

Scarcity of Jet A1 also known as aviation fuel is biting airline operators in Nigeria harder, pushing Arik Airlines to cut down on the number of flights within and outside the country.

This was made known by Mr Bola Adebanji, the airline’s communications manager, who announced that the flight reduction is from November 16 to cope with fresh scarcity of aviation fuel which began last week.

He said in a statement, that “with a daily fuel need of about 500,000 litres and an average of over 100 daily flights, Arik Air is mostly affected by this scarcity which is the fourth this year alone”.

The airline said the reduction will curb unpleasant flight delays and cancellations which passengers experience in recent times.

It would be recalled that an oil marketer issued a Notice of Airmen (NOTAM), notifying of non-availability of the product in Lagos.

The minister of aviation, Hadi Sirika, had however assured stakeholders in the sector that the federal government is working round the clock to address the scarcity.
