Arsenal boss clears air on Wenger's future

In reaction to calls from Arsenal fans calling for Arsene Wenger’s sack as manager of the club, Arsenal chairman Sir Chips Keswick has insisted that Wenger will stay till the end of the season.

He said whatever decision there is to make afterwards would be mutual between the board and the Frenchman.

“We are fully aware of the attention currently focused on the club and understand the debate,” Keswick said in a statement released on the club website Thursday.

“We respect that fans are entitled to their different individual opinions but we will always run this great football club with its best long-term interests at heart.

“Arsene has a contract until the end of the season. Any decisions will be made by us mutually and communicated at the right time in the right way.”

However, following a protest by a group of fans after Arsenal’s 5-1 Champions League home defeat to Bayern Munich on Tuesday, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger did express that the opinion of fans will influence his decision over whether to remain in charge of the club next season.

“It will not be the most important factor but you consider it, of course,” Wenger said of the fans’ reaction.

“I worked very hard for 20 years to make our fans happy and when you lose I understand they are not.”

Wenger has been Arsenal boss since October 1996, and has led Arsenal to its current fifth place in the Premier League this season, 16 points behind leaders Chelsea.

Meanwhile, Arsenal will host Lincoln City in their quarter-final tie of the FA Cup this weekend.
