Arsenal shareholder Usmanov demands 'full support' for Wenger

Following the successful two-year extension of Arsene Wenger’s contract at Arsenal, the club’s minority shareholder Alisher Usmanov has told the board to give enough support to the Frenchman to deliver.

The Russian billionaire has made no secret of his desire to take charge of Arsenal and has issued a warning to majority shareholder, Stan Kroenke, that if full support is not given to Wenger, he would “step in”.

Usmanov, who owns just over 30% of the club but isn’t a member of the board, backed the decision to retain Wenger as he believes the 67-year old is one of Europe’s best managers.

“I am pleased Arsene Wenger will continue to manage Arsenal for the next two years, he is one of the best coaches in Europe,” Usmanov said in a statement on Thursday.

“What is now of paramount importance is that he receives the full support of the board and the majority shareholder.

“He has a great opportunity to deliver the success that the fans deserve and the legacy his long contribution merits.”

Usmanov recently offered to buy Kroenke’s shares but was denied by the American billionaire. His warning as quoted from his statement appears he’s still ready to do so.

“Without the right support there remains a real risk his [Wenger’s] legacy will be tarnished.

“If the support is not forthcoming we stand ready to step in and do everything we can to deliver success on and off the field,” he added.

The Gunners finished 5th last season, the first time in 20 years they’d finish outside the top four to miss a spot in the Champions League.
