English Premier League side, Arsenal failed to reach the final of the 2017-18 Europa League after losing 2-1 on aggregate to Spanish giants, Atletico Madrid in the semifinal.

Having drawn 1-1 in the first leg of the tie at the Emirates Stadium, the Gunners came hunting for a win in Spain but were edged 1-0 by their opponents.

Former Chelsea forward, Diego Costa was the goal scorer. He found the back of the net just at the end of the first half and it made the difference on Thursday night.

Antoine Griezmann, who scored in the first leg, made the crucial pass through to Costa after coming close with a powerful strike from a tight angle.

Arsene Wenger’s men, who are currently sixth on the Premier League table, have thus lost the chance of playing in the Champions League next season.

And Wenger will leave the club at the end of the season without an European trophy to his name throughout his 22-year spell at the club.

Arsenal will be missing out on Champions League football for the second straight season.

Two-time champions Atletico will now face Marseille in their third Europa League final in eight years in Lyon on May 16.
