ASUU downs tools, declares indefinite strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Sunday declared an indefinite strike action, and called on all its members across the country to abandon all official duties in the ivory towers.

The union after a crucial meeting which was called at the weekend to take members’ vote on whether or not to embark on strike, said the move became the last option since government chose to ignore the agreements reached since 2009.

ASUU at the end of the meeting held in Abuja, issued a ‘Strike Bulletin Nô 1′ signed by its president, Abiodun Ogunyemi, on behalf of the ASUU Strike Coordinating Committee, which stated that an overwhelming majority of members opted for the strike action.

The leadership described the strike as “total, comprehensive and indefinite”.

Government, represented by the Ministry of Labour and employment, as well as ministry of Education is yet to respond to the lecturers’ actions.
