Atheists sue Kenyan govt over holiday for Pope’s visit

An atheist group is preparing to challenge a government decision to declare a public holiday on Thursday by President Uhuru Kenyata’s government following the visit of Pope Francis.

The group said the decision to declare Thursday a public holiday and a day of prayer was unconstitutional.

“The constitution clearly states that there shall be no state religion. We cannot have the government acting religiously,” its leader Harrison Mumia said, on Kenya’s Nation FM radio station.

Pope Francis is due to hold a mass on Thursday at the University of Nairobi sports ground, where a crowd of more than one million is expected, in his first visit since becoming pope to an African country.

According to statistics, one in six of the world’s Catholics are in Africa.
