NJC absolves tribunal judge accused of taking bribe by Smart Adeyemi

The Supreme Court has fixed Friday to give the grounds for its judgement in the appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, challenging the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari in the election.

The Supreme had in what many believed to be a summary adjudication of the appeal, dismissed Atiku’s appeal for lack of merit on October 30.

The verdict surprised many Nigerians, especially the PDP, who felt the apex court did not give its candidate fair hearing on the matter.

At the sitting, the seven-member panel of judges led by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Tanko Muhammad, said they would give reasons for their ruling at a later date.

“Having gone through the briefs for over two weeks, we have come to the conclusion that this appeal lacks merit. This appeal is hereby dismissed. The reason will be given at a date to be communicated to parties,” the CJN ruled.

In a notice to the lawyers dated November 13 and signed by the Registrar at the Supreme Court, Ibrahim Gold, the court said: “TAKE NOTICE that the REASONS FOR THE JUDGEMENT delivered on Wednesday, the 30th day of October 2019 in the above-named Appeal will be listed before the Supreme Court of Nigeria on Friday the 15th day of November 2019 at 9.00 am.

“AND FURTHER TAKE NOTICE that in accordance with the Supreme Court Rules, this Notice is deemed sufficiently served on you if it is delivered on your telephone.”
