Two goals in the extra time by Atletico Madrid ensured they beat city rivals Real Madrid 4-2 to win the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday night.

The Europa League winners got ahead very early in the game with a Diego Costa opener in the first minute, but Real got back into the game via a 27th-minute header from Karim Benzema.

Sergio Ramos converted a penalty in the 63rd minute to restore the lead, before Costa scored his second of the night in the 79th minute to seal the game at 2-2 at full time.

Saul and Koke then fired in two quick goals in the 98th and 104th minutes to finish up the job.

It was Real’s first match since Cristiano Ronaldo signed for Juventus last month and manager Zinedine Zidane was replaced as manager by former Spain coach Julen Lopetegui.

Atletico Madrid have played in this game three times – and have won all three.

Their coach, Diego Simeone, who watched the game from the stands, became the first Atletico manager to win a final against Real Madrid in three different competitions: Copa del Rey, Supercopa and UEFA Super Cup.

Meanwhile, Lopetegui became the first Real Madrid manager to concede four or more goals in his first competitive game in charge since Michael Keeping against Celta Vigo in February 1948.
