Torres, Nwakali score as Atletico Madrid defeat Super Eagles B

The Super Eagles team B were edged 3-2 by Atletico Madrid in the GOtv Max Cup at the Godwill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom on Tuesday night.

The recently crowned Europa League champions were given a good fight by the Nigerian side, with an 85th-minute goal in favour of the visitors deciding the winner.

Atletico fielded stars like Jan Oblak, Juanfran, Thomas Party, Fernando Torres, Kevin Gameiro et al to face Nigerian youngsters like Kelechi and Chidiebere Nwakali, Emem Eduok and Femi Thomas.

Arsenal player Nwakali opened the scoring, putting the home team ahead on the half-hour mark, but the lead did not last long as Angel Correa leaveled just 3 minutes after.

Torres fired Atletico ahead in the 63rd minute before Nigeria’s Rio 2016 Olympic bronze medal winner Usman Mohammed brought the Eagles back into the game with a sweet goal on 79 minutes.

It appeared the game was going to end in a draw, but Borja Garces helped Atleti grab the winner just five minutes before stoppage time.

The game turned out to be a highly contested game at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, and the home fans were well entertained.

The hybrid friendly was put together by MultiChoice Nigeria, who brought the Spanish giants to the country for the very first time.

Nigeria will now focus on preparations for the FIFA 2018 World Cup finals in Russia.
