Banker jailed 32 months for helping Iran evade US sanctions

Mehmet Hakan Atilla, a 47-year-old Turkish banker with state-controlled Halkbank has been slammed with a 32-month jail sentence for helping Iran evade US sanctions.

The banker was slammed with the sentence by US judge after he was found culpable of taking part in a scheme to help Iran evade sanctions imposed by US.

Reports say US prosecutors wanted 15 years sentence for Atilla but the bankers lawyers sought a sentence of less than four years.

Atilla was found guilty on January 3 of conspiring to violate US sanctions law.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has condemned the sentence describing it as a political attack on his government even as the case has strained diplomatic relations between the US and Ankara.
