Josep Maria Bartomeu, Barcelona’s president, says the club are interested in creating a women’s football team to play in America’s NWSL.

Barcelona opened new offices in New York this week – the official launch was attended by Ronaldinho, Hristo Stoichkov and David Villa, among others – and Bartomeu said the club was looking at various possibilities to expand its brand in the US.

Bartomeu said he wanted “create a team that can take part in the National Women’s Soccer League” in the form of a franchise “that will help us to promote the club”.

“The women’s football league here is very interesting,” Bartomeu said. “We’re thinking about the option, in the future, of having our own team here, to compete at the maximum level, and to help us become more well known.”

The NWSL were yet to respond to a request for comment.

The Barcelona women’s team currently competes in Spain’s Primera Division, and won four successive titles between 2012 and 2015. Last year, Athletic Bilbao won their fifth title.
