Barcelona snatch draw at Espanyol to set club record

A late equaliser by Gerard Pique helped Barcelona secure a point at Espanyol on Sunday, as they set a club record of 22 games unbeaten at the start of the La Liga season.

Lionel Messi started from the bench as Philippe Coutinho started, making his fourth appearance since arriving Nou Camp.

The former Liverpool star hit the bar in the first half before Gerard Moreno’s header gave the hosts the lead midway through the second.

Espanyol thought there were heading to a win when, with only eight minutes left, defender Pique headed home Messi’s free-kick to snatch the point for the visitors.

The victory extends Barcelona’s lead at top of the table to 12 points, pending the outcome of the game between scond-placed Atletico Madrid and Valencia later on Sunday.

Barca’s arch rivals, Real Madrid also played a 2-2 draw at Levante on Saturday.
