BAYELSA: Unknown gunmen kill 4 soldiers, 1 civilian

FG blames miliancy for lack of development in Niger Delta

A team of soldiers returning from the waterways of Letugbene community in Ekeremor Local Government Area of Bayelsa State were killed when they were ambushed by gunmen suspected to be militants.

Reports say the soldiers who were caught unawares by the militants and overpowered by the gunmen who dispossessed them of their weapons and took them to a hideout somewhere in the creeks where they were all shot dead.

The only civilian, a boat driver who escaped the ambush of the militants was however reportedly shot dead when he jumped into the river to evade the threat posed by the gunmen.

The incident was confirmed by Mr. Tare Porri, Chairman of the Ijaw Youth Council Worldwide, Central Zone, who condemned the brutal attack of the militants on the soldiers describing the attack as ‘‘bizarre and unprovoked.’’

As at the time of filing in this report, Rear Admiral Suleiman Apochi, the Commander, Operation Delta Safe was yet to comment on the matter even as a police source said only the soldiers were killed in the attack, as the civilian attached to the soldiers escaped being shot by the militants.
