Benue: Cholera, malnutrition loom as IDPs lament food, water shortages

Published

on

A new crisis is looming at the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps in Benue State as victims of herdsmen attacks, who were currently taking refuge in the camps had continued to live in the most squalid environments.

Some of the camps said to be in danger of cholera outbreak and malnutrition includedthose in Daudu, Abagena, Gbajimba as well as in Anyiin in Guma and Logo Local Government Areas.

Reports from the camps said lack of potable water and open defecation, arising from absence of toilets, was responsible for the terrible state of the camps. Also, the victims, especially children, if adequate steps were not taken, could suffer severe malnutrition due to shortage of food supply.

Investigation by New Telegraph further revealed that another disease that could threaten the health of the victims was cough, which was due to exposure to the cold associated with the current weather.
