OSUN GOV POLL: Police clarify controversies on number of commissioners to be deployed

The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has denied allegations that the police force is taking sides against Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom.

The IG stated this on Wednesday while meeting with commissioners of Police and above in Abuja, insisting that “The Nigeria police force does not take side in any issue, we are only committed to the development of the country.”

The police and the IGP, especially, have come under serious condemnation for the role the force has been allegedly playing in the current political crisis in the state, which culminated in 8 members of the House of Assembly gaining entry into the chambers and issuing an impeachment notice on the state governor.

There were also reports that policemen stopped about 22 members of the House who belonged to the governor’s camp from entering the House of Assembly complex. The complex has been ordered sealed by the IGP.

Idris also called on officers and men of the force to always act within the confines of the law of the nation in carrying out their mandate, adding that he would not condone the killing of his men.

“All our actions must be to preserve law and order all over the country.

“The Nigeria Police Force will not tolerate the killings of its officers across the country.

“We are going to continue in the mop-up of illegal arms in the country for the integrity of the country,“he said.
