BENUE: Unknown gunmen shoot INEC Returning Officer

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Returning Officer for Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State, Professor T. Doshima has been shot by unknown gunmen.

Professor Doshima was shot while traveling from Gboko to Makurdi after the conclusion of the supplementary election and announcement of result for the LG.

According to eye-witness, Mr.  Issac  Utom, who spoke to reporters in Makurdi, the Returning Officer was traveling in the company of the electoral officer and the driver of the vehicle marked FG 273 UO1.

Doshima, according to the eye witness, has been admitted in a hospital, as she sustained injuries.

He said: “Around 6pm after the EO and Returning Officer of Gboko declared the winner of the constituency,  they arranged everything,  we moved from Gboko to Makurdi around 9pm.

“On our way to Makurdi some group of men,  armed thugs started shooting at the INEC vehicle that was conveying the materials to Makurdi.

“They shot Prof.  Dooshima who is the Returning Officer for Gboko LG, so after they shot her,  we drove straight to INEC headquarters so that we can make a comment.  She is in the hospital.”
