Benzema's late goal sets new record for Madrid

Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema scored a late equaliser against Sevilla on Thursday night to help his side set a new Spanish record of 40 matches unbeaten.

The match, which was the second leg of their round-of-16 jostle in the Copa Del Rey, ended in a 3-3 draw in a comeback thriller at Sevilla.

The defending European champions were two goals down going into the 83rd minute before Sergio Ramos’s daring Panenka from the penalty spot and a 93rd-minute goal from Benzema salvaged the draw and the streak.

Real, since their last defeat in April 2016, have won 31 matches and drawn 9 matches; they have scored 115 goals and conceded 39 – all across all competitions.

Madrid have thus now broken Barcelona’s Spanish record of longest unbeaten run of 39 games – a feat that Luis Enrique men set between 2015 and 2016.

In the other Copa del Rey fixtures on thursday, Valencia lost 2-1 to Celta Vigo while Osasuna drew goalless against Eibar.

The scoreline for Madrid means they will progress to the quater-finals of the Spanish competition, as they already won sevilla 3-0 last week, to equal 6-3 on aggregate.
