A campaign for the release of an Australian doctor and his wife who were both kidnapped on the same day Al-Qaeda attacked a hotel in the capital of Ouagadougou is now the topic of discussion among Burkinabes on social media.

Reports say locals have started posting messages of support in a bid to get word out there for the couple to be released immediately from captivity.

The kidnapped couple, Ken and Jocelyn Elliot, both in their 80’s, have built medical facilities since the 1970’s in the town of Djibo near the border between Burkina Faso and Mali.

In a related development, Hamadou Ag Khallini, a spokesperson for Malian militant group Ansar Dine, told Australian media that the Al Qaeda-linked Emirate of the Sahara group were holding the couple.
