B’Haram attacks military base, sets fire on IDPs camps

Rampaging Boko Haram sect, terrorizing the North East part of Nigeria is said to have again attacked a military base and set fire on Internally Displaced Person’s homes (IDPs) in Rann, Borno State.

It was learnt that the latest attack in Rann located some 175 kilometres northeast of Maiduguri, the Borno State capital happened Monday causing people in the area to flee for their lives.

Rann, which hosts some 35,000 internally displaced people (IDPs), according to the International Organization for Migration, has constantly suffered attacks by the insurgent group.

Report from the area said the terrorists group started the attack at about 5:25 pm and took over a military position in Rann after a heavy fighting.

It was learnt that due to poor visibility as a result of Harmattan in the area, the army could not deploy air force jets as troops were forced to withdraw.

Though no case of casualties were recorded, the insurgents were said to have gone about setting fire to camps and shelters of IDPs.

Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) faction of Boko Haram is believed to have carried out the attack.

In January 2017, some citizens were killed in Rann when Nigerian air force jets mistakenly bombed the IDP camp there.

Also last year March, humanitarian operations in Rann were suspended after Boko Haram attacked a military base and killed three aid workers.

The group had also kidnapped three health workers and two of them have since been executed.
