Biafra agitators are jokers, Buhari says

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that those agitating for a sovereign state of Biafra at this time are jokers, and that Nigeria will not tolerate such a thing.

Buhari in an interview with al Jazeera, during his recent trip to Qatar, stated that they are toying with the country’s security.

According to him, “At least two million Nigerians were killed in the Biafra war. And for somebody to wake up, may be they weren’t born, looking for Biafra after two millions people were killed, they are joking with the security of the country. Nigeria won’t tolerate Biafra.”

The president also stated that his government was not against peaceful pro-Biafra protests, but explained that demands for the creation of a state of Biafra are against the constitution.

On calls by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for Nigeria to devalue its currency, Buhari stated, that the country will not be dictated to by the IMF or any external force in the way it runs its economy.

“If it is against our national interest, why can’t we go against the IMF advice?” Buhari asked.

According to him, “countries that play around with their currencies are countries that have enormous production.

“Their infrastructure is in place. Infrastructure in terms of power, communication and security are virtually alright. Nigeria virtually imports everything from rice to toothpicks. Now, if you do not have the money to import those things, what is the point devaluing your naira?”

He also stated that Nigeria will not pull out of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) despite the falling price of crude oil in the international market, maintaining, that it would pay the country to remain in the group.
